decent car, decent price so why only one star you may ask?Well I decided to forgo the pricey full insurance coverage (thats how all these rentals make their money) that required me to put a 500 deposit on my credit card in case of damage. No worries.... I have been down this road many times. The charge is not processed, it is only a temporary hold on the card and taken off once the car is returned. I should point out that this was on a Canadian visa card. It was not until I returned to Toronto and saw my credit card statement that I realized what had happened. The clerk had actually charged my card for the 500 deposit and then refunded me the monies when I returned the card. So what is the big deal? Well anyone who has traveled knows there are exchange rate fees. I was hit up with an exchange rate premium on both ends of the deposit transaction which resulted in me loosing more money for that transaction that what I paid for the actual car rental, which I paid in cash. So lesson learned. If you are renting with a foreign credit card make sure that when they say they are putting a hold on your card it is really only a hold.
I made a booking for a car with Thrifty Glasgow City two days in advance of a day trip I was planning on my holiday in Scotland. At 5.25 pm the evening before my trip I received an email telling me no cars were available. If I could give less than one star for this service I would. I will never darken the door of this company again.
